Backup & Restore

The TrackerPod is a motorized pod for webcam that allow to move the cam horizontally and vertically either via a web page (remotely) or using the 'motion tracking' option (the cam automatically follows a color or a pre-difined zone). You can also zoom but be aware that it is a software zoom.

You can mainly choose beetween 2 prices for the same TrackerPod, the 'standard' version in a printed box with CD and Installation guide for $175, and the 'OEM' version in a no printed box without CD and installation guide (everything is available on the website) for $125. This is a very good idea because economy is valuable ($50 less) and we can easly get everything on the website.

Once you have taken everything out of the box you need to insert the adaptator for the QuickCam PRO 3000 then screw the cam on the Pod. The webcam and TrackerPod are managed separately but the pod is auto-powered via the USB cable.

Setting up:

As I received the OEM version I had to get the setup guide and the drivers on the net but I had no problem at all to set it up. the setup guide is clear and comprehensive.

There is 4 main steps to install you TrackerPod:

1. Assemble the cam on the pod.

2. Plug the cam and the pod (USB).

3. Install the software.

4. Adjust parameters

Adjusting parameters:

Parameters are adjusted via web pages and there is always some explanations on every setup pages so it is very user-friendly, below some of the setting features:

• Startup (default and start settings).

• Communication: User privileges, surveillance, FTP uploading, change IP and port number, connected users, etc...

• Display and camera: Set video size, select camera, zoom options, etc...

• Tracking: Set speed, timeout, etc...

• TrackerPod: Select a trackerPod, Set motor limits, home position, step size, etc...

Trackercam Software

We are able to set a lot of interesting features (could be frightening for a novice), for exemple we can give webcam access to everybody or only some users by creatin user names and passwords. We can work in streaming mode or with FTP images captures. we can also use surveillance with pictures historic. The system has also a very effective 'motion tracking' it means the camera is able to follow a zone, a face or whatever else we have selected on the image and it works pretty fine as long as the person or object don't move too fast.

Once these parameters are set you can quickly check the lloking of your remote webcam page by starting your browser, enter the IP address of your PC (server) and the port you defined (ex: http://10.10.10.1:8080). You arrive on the 'remote access login' page (fig. 3).

If you configured 'Guest allowed' you can click on the 'GUEST' button and use the resulting URL as default page for your remote controlled webcam. (see fig. 4)

See below the standard remote controlled webcam window, 'photo' button (down right) allow user to get a captured JPEG picture. The button with arrows (beside the 'photo' button) allow to launch a separate applet control. However you can just click on the picture (right, left, down, up) to move the cam.

Appets used for the remote controlled cam are well done and not so heavy, so it does not take so much time to load.

Local (server) software 'trackerCam':

The server software is very nice and, well done and user-friendly, see below a capture of the server interface:

On the left pane you can modify some parameters for the current session as get offline or online, you may start a third-party webcam application like webcam32 or you can change the video parameters (ex: video window size).
On the 'capture' section you can capture pictures or video and on the 'tracking' section you can adjust the motion tracking speed. Finally you can activate the voice tracking control (control the webcam with typical sentenses).

Motorisation:

The TrackerPod uses 2 servo-motors (those we use in radiocommanded planes or cars) and the mechanical is made relatively simple and clever to be almost unbreackable. The movements of the cam are also indicated with directions LED's.

Conclusion:

The TrackerPod is a very nice product with a very complete and well done software with a lot of adjustable parameters (good for experimented users but not so good for novice users). We also appreciate the online support with software updates and documentation. The TrackerPod allow you to use a webcam of your choice but for this reason the system needs 2 USB cables (cam+TrackerPod).
The Zoom fonction is interesting but because it is a numeric zoom (not optic) it is not so usefull.
